When AWARE began in the 1970s, good-hearted women opened their homes to provide refuge to survivors of domestic & sexual violence. As we’ve grown, we developed an emergency sheltering program that has saved lives, enabled safe parents to care for their children, and those children in turn to feel protected and loved.

AWARE’s Mission
Our Mission is to provide safe shelter and supportive services for survivors of domestic or sexual violence; and to effect the social, political, and legal changes needed to eliminate oppression, gender violence, and violence against children.
