The need to help the Children living on pavements in and around the Church came up in the year 1975, when there was a serious problem of food shortage in the City. The Scottish Missionaries would prepare food packets in the Church and distribute them to the poor homeless street Children every day. This was the beginning. This food distribution continued. More Children started coming to the Church of St Columba for food. In the year 1995, the Church introduced a non-formal education system and called it “The Pavement School”.

These children were constantly encouraged to join formal schools. At present, around 50 students attend formal schools wearing smart school uniforms. After the morning school session the students assemble in the Church of St. Columba for their study classes. Volunteers from the Cathedral School and the Xavier’s College help our students in their studies. Around 3pm., a hot sumptuous lunch is served to the students. After which they have playing, dancing and computer learning session. The students get help from the Project Counselor whenever they are in need. Regular medical checkups are held by NGOs.

Many of our project children have reached College level and many are working in good companies and establishments.
