The City of Wasilla Police Department was established in 1993, and has grown from eight commissioned officers to 28 commissioned officers in 2021. Wasilla Police Department serves a city of over 8,000 residents. The growth of the Matanuska-Susitna Borough has created an area population of nearly 95,000 residents. 

Many of the Borough residents and seasonal visitors shop and seek services in the City. Local residents and visitors from other parts of the state and nation pass through the City of Wasilla to access the many recreational opportunities within the Mat-Su Valley.

The Wasilla Police Department has been involved in many community projects such as Mat-Su Youth Court, regional multidisciplinary teams, and other local and regional projects. Wasilla Police Department also has a K9 team, and department personnel participate on the Alaska State Trooper Special Emergency Reaction Team (S.E.R.T)., with the Mat-Su Narcotics Unit, and the Mat-Su Child Abuse Investigation Unit. Wasilla Police Department also has School Resource Officers (SRO) stationed at Wasilla High School, Redington Jr/Sr High School, and Houston High School during the regular school year.
